You’ve never seen such a huge shells like this before!
Added building block to your journey
You will stay on the beautiful island of Sanibel or in the lovely town of Fort Meyers. Sanibel is, together with Captiva, an Island connected to the mainland by a bridge.
The millions of shells attract thousands of collectors from all over the world. And rightly so! It will be a lovely day, as you and the children sail to a deserted island in half an hour. This place can only be reached by boat. Enjoy for 2 to 4 hours a wonderful rest on the white beaches. Meanwhile, the children can snorkel and collect numerous shells. The tides throw so many shells on the beach, that they sometimes completely cover the sand. One shell is even more beautiful than the other. Shelf-seekers walk around curved, looking for beautiful specimens. This attitude is so typical for this island that it is called the Sanibel Stoop. According to experts, the best time to visit the islands (at least for the shells) is after a north to northwest storm. Then the shell carpet left behind is at its thickest.
A good advice: don’t forget to bring a bag. After all, your children will not be able to stop collecting.
If you feel like it, you can drive through the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge Park. This mangrove nature park is home to numerous birds, spiders, snakes, alligators and other special animals. The trip is 6 km long (has to be paid).
Then you drive on to the next fun destination: this could be the paradise beaches of Naples, by boat to Key West or to the Everglades.
