Vaccinations for South Africa are not compulsory (except for yellow fever if you visited a country with yellow fever in the seven days prior to your arrival in South Africa).

But for a stay in South Africa, following vaccinations are recommended:

  • DTP (diphtheria, tetanus and polio)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B, rabies and tuberculosis are also recommended for stays longer than three months.

Read our “Healthy trip” page for more information. You will also find a travel pharmacy.

There are many national parks where there is no malaria at all, such as Pilanesberg or Addo Elephants Park. If you want to avoid taking malaria tablets, you should visit these malaria-free parks to spot the Big 5.

But in some parts of the country (such as Kruger Park in the east) the malaria mosquito occurs. It is therefore recommended to take malaria tablets.

In general, it is advisable to take measures against mosquito bites (a mosquito repellent with DEET or covering clothing).

Contact your doctor about 4 to 6 weeks before departure to South Africa to discuss the health of each family member.
