This is what you need to know about money matters in Canada:

  • The currency in Canada is the Canadian Dollar. The credit card is a common means of payment in Canada. There are not many countries in the world where credit cards are as widely accepted as in Canada. You will see that you can pay with your credit card in many places. However, this is not possible everywhere, so it is always good to have some cash in your pocket as an alternative.
  • Order your dollars well in advance, or keep an eye on the exchange rate in the months before your departure. If you have to change money on the spot, it often costs a lot more.
  • Make sure you can use your card to withdraw money in Canada, this usually has to be activated at your bank.
  • Tips are very important to the locals. Tips are generous, because they are an important part of the salary. In restaurants you tip at least 15-20%. In a bar it is common to tip $1 per drink. For guides a tip of 20% is standard. Piccolo’s, bus drivers and porters expect about $1 per suitcase.
