Day 1: Arrival at Sarapiqui

Sarapiqui is an ideal stop between San José and Boca Tapada or La Fortuna (Arenal volcano). You will stay here in a beautiful lodge in the middle of nature.  There is also a swimming pool where the children can have a great time.

Visit the butterfly garden or the bird table.  We have spotted one of the most beautiful birds here: the Oro Pendula with its yellow tail and a family Toekans who just came along for lunch.

zelf chocolade maken, tour door de plantages

Day 2: How do you make chocolate?

Here we have arranged a visit for you where you will discover how chocolate is made in the traditional way and where you can participate in that process (from the plant to the actual chocolate). Cacao, the legendary fruit from Central America, was not only an ancient currency with a huge impact on history, but also one of the most important products for the Maya, Aztec and other Central American cultures.
The tour starts with a short walk to a former cocoa plantation, located in the forest. Cocoa used to be grown here in the traditional way, the cocoa trees grew in the forest, surrounded by other types of trees. Along the way you will get interesting information about the natural and cultural history of the cocoa tree. Once arrived, you will be shown the artisanal process that converts cocoa fruits into chocolate, while you will learn more about pre- and post-colonial chocolate. Of course you also have the possibility to taste different kinds of chocolate, prepared on the spot in the traditional way!

The tour is very educational but also fun for the children. Of course you can taste the delicious “Cacao” drink and test whether the chocolate made in Costa Rica is as delicious as the Belgian one.

Day 3: Departure from Sarapiqui

Today you can go to your next building block and discover for example the “Hot springs at Arenal volcano” or the “Jungle adventure in Boca Tapada”.  You can also go to the “Giant turtles in Tortuguero”.
